The Bell Lab has active research projects in the following areas related to 1) The roles post-translational modifications (Phosphorylation) play in SIKE Structure and Function, Cystatin structure and function and Dehydrogenase Structure and function, 2) the roles non covalent interactions play in Malate Dehydrogenase Structure and Function, Allosteric Regulation of Glutamate Dehydrogenase, Mechanisms of Catalysis and Regulation of Phosphoglycerate Dehydrogenase, and 3) Mechanism of Folding, and of Thiol Protease Inhibition by Cystatins and Related Structures. Each area contains links to the scientific background to these projects and information about the genetic constructs we have developed and use and to recent publications and presentations and students and collaborators currently working with us.
In each of these project areas we are interested in therapeutics development and the areas all use both wet lab and computational approaches to explore mechanism of catalysis and regulation, adaptation and evolution, aspects of substrate and ligand specificity, folding and stability, and protein interactions in both quaternary and quinary structure as appropriate. Each project area also makes use of phosphomimics to explore potential roles of phosphorylation.
